Geek of the Week: Meet Becca

What's your name?
Becca C.

Where are you from?
Bellingham, WA

What does it mean to you to be a geek/nerd?
To me, being a geek is someone who is inherently passionate about their likes, loves and obsession. To be excited when you see your favorite actor in a different show, to feel good because you finally baked that loaf of bread, or to see a movie nine times in theaters because it was just THAT good. (Side note, I saw Return of the King and Pirates of the Caribbean 9 times in the theater).

What are 2–5 things you're particularly passionate about?
1. Radical Living. A couple of year ago, I read the book Radical Homemaking by Shannon Hayes and it totally changed my life. It's the basis for my blog and how I want to live my life. I love DIY, crafting, upcyling, farming, canning, cooking, etc.
Ed. note: I need to check out this book!

2. Doctor Who. My little sister introduced me to the show a few years back and ever since then, the Doctor and I have been inseparable. I've seen every episode of the new reboot at least three times and I'm working my way through Classic Who. I have Doctor Who memorabilia in almost every room of my house (and my car).

3. LEGO video games. While I game and love other games like Fable, Skyrim, Call of Duty, etc. I've found a real love in the LEGO-based games like Harry Potter, Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean and my newest, Lord of the Rings. They are a fun play, and if you are in the fandom and know the stories, the game developers added in funny little quirks just for you.

4. Futurama. OMG, I think this is one of the smartest and funniest cartoons around. I started watching it when I met my husband nine years ago and we haven't stopped. I'm excited to be going to Comic-Con this year as Leela! I also recently had a friend knit me a brain slug, how cool is that? Yeah, baby, I know it (says Bender).

Why are you passionate about these things?
I'm passionate about everything because it makes me happy to be excited. It's what runs my life. Being passionate is what makes me, well, me. :)

Do you have any special or hidden talents?
Hmm ... I actually had to ask my husband about this one. He said my photography would be a special talent I have. I love taking pictures, and I'm still totally learning, but every picture on my blog is taken by me! I like taking pictures because I want people to see what I see when I look at the world. I want them to see the magical, the unseen, the beautiful.

What was your favorite book/movie/TV show/other from 2012?
The Hobbit. Hands down, it was the best movie I saw all year.

What book/movie/TV show/other are you most looking forward to in 2013?
The return of Doctor Who, I can hardly wait until April! I'm also super happy about the return of Arrested Development to Netflix and December is going to be a super long wait for the next part of the Hobbit.
Ed. note: April is so far awaaaaay. *whine*

Do you have a "go-to" karaoke/Rock Band song? What is it?
I can't sing worth beans. My voice is so off-key. So I watch and dance around to music.

What are three websites you like to visit every day?

Do you have a blog/website/Twitter name/etc. that you'd like to share?

Becca's bonus questions:

Who's your favorite Doctor (out of the new and the classic) and why? Similarly, who's your favorite companion?
My favorite Doctor has to be David Tennant (10). He was really what brought me into my Doctor Who obsession, but I love all of them. Occasionally I will get nostalgic for 10, but then I realize how freaking brilliant Matt Smith is. I haven't watched too much of the old classic Who, but it is one of my goals tho s year to go through every episode! :) My favorite companion has to be Clara Oswin Oswald, I had a thing for Rose because she reminded me of myself at that age, but Clara is amazing and I've loved in in all of the two episodes we seen her in. Brilliant. A perfect companion.
Ed. note: I couldn't agree more about the Doctors!

Do you ever have days where your passion wanes? What kinds of things do you do (if/when that happens) to re-energize yourself?
Oh, I do, I do. There are days that I wonder to myself why the heck am I doing this? To what point is it going to bring me to. But, then I realize I'm doing it for fun, I'm doing it to connect and most of all I'm doing it because I want to. If it ever comes to the day that I don't want to do it, I'll throw the towel in. In the meantime, I play a lot of video games to re-energize myself when I have to walk away from my blog or the projects I'm doing with it. I also like medicating as it helps to bring my stress level down. I tend to engage in activities that make me feel good about myself to ramp that energy back up. You just have to find what works for you and go with it. Don't overthink it, just do it! :)

Thanks, Becca, for being a Geek of the Week!

If you'd like to be a future GotW, please email me.

  1. Oh my gosh! I love it, thank you so much. =)

  2. I'm glad you got another GotW. I always like reading these.

I'm currently working my way through Futurama. It was a show I watched all the time in re-runs on Adult Swim, but never really followed. I was so sad when I got to the last episode on Netflix because for some reason I was under the impression that it only lasted a couple more seasons after Cartoon Network picked it up and it was over for good, but Good news! It's still going on! I'm right in the middle of the episodes from last year and I can't wait for the new ones to start again. That show is fun on a bun!

    1. Futurama is fabulous! It's one of my all-time favorite shows. My hubby and I were so excited when it got picked back up and we own every season and movie! Plus, I'm going as Leela this year at the Emerald City Comic-Con.

    2. I've actually got at least two more coming up, too. I like the feature a lot and glad it's made a bit of a resurgence.

    3. and i'm now going to be saying fun on a bun. a lot. like all the time. i'll give you credit when people ask, wes.

  3. i love reading about other whovians- now that i'm in dallas i'm feeling kinda on my own with it since most of my nerdy friends were austin-centric. it helps to feel connected. ")

    1. I'm glad you feel that this feature helps you connect with other nerds. :D That was the whole idea!

  4. Awesome! Connections are key my life and I just love that. <3

  5. I'm the same way, Rebecca. The internet helps me feel connected to my inner nerd.

  6. Futurama is one of my all-time favorite shows and I can't get enough. In fact, it was the first show me and my hubby watched when we were dating. :)
