Geek of the Week: Meet Monique

What's your name?
Monique

Where are you from?
Durban, South Africa

What does it mean to you to be a geek/nerd?
Being utterly, ridiculously passionate about something.

What are 2–5 things you're particularly passionate about?
Books, Music, Superheroes and Star Wars.

Why are you passionate about these things?
I love words. I love the images, meaning and emotions you can convey with them whether set to music or in the pages of a book.

Superheroes make my heart happy and Star Wars for more reasons than I can possibly list here! Mostly because I wanted to be a Jedi from the moment I first saw them ...
Ed. note: Superheroes make my heart happy too! And being a Jedi would be awesome.

Do you have any special or hidden talents?
Nope! If I do, I haven't found it yet. ;)

What was your favorite book/movie/TV show/other from 2011?
Favorite movie was Midnight in Paris, favorite book was The Sense of an Ending and favorite album was Death Cab for Cutie's Codes and Keys.

What book/movie/TV show/other are you most looking forward to in 2012?
The Hobbit and The Great Gatsby and...well there are actually just too many!
Ed. note: Right? 2012 is shaping up to be an excellent year for entertainment.

Do you have a "go-to" karaoke/Rock Band song? What is it?
When we had Guitar Hero it was "Prayer of the Refugee" ... does that count?

What are three websites you like to visit every day?
The Mail & Guardian to read the news, Google Reader to get my blog fix and Facebook so I remember everyone's birthdays.

Do you have a blog/website/Twitter name/etc. that you'd like to share?

Monique's bonus questions:

If you could have any color of lightsaber, what color would you choose and why?
Good question. It’s a toss up between red like Darth Vader because he is my favourite villain or blue like Obi Wan Kenobi because its, well, Obi Wan.
Ed. note: I'd go with a totally unusual color like yellow or turquoise.

Do you prefer reading classics or new books, or does "age" not matter?
I have a special place in my heart for the classics. I read Great Expectations every year and I’ve built up quite a collection! That said, there are plenty of new books and authors that I really enjoy too so I guess the answer is that "age" doesn’t matter.

Thanks, Monique, for being a Geek of the Week!

If you'd like to be a future GotW, please email me.

Nerd News: Avengers art, summer movies and new Syfy

Vol. 3, Issue 17

Mondo has once again amazed with the rest of the solo Avengers photos. Check 'em out:

(viaviaviavia)

Some of these sites seem to hint that there will be a group poster as well ... I sure hope so!

In TV news this week:

What an excellent Inspector Spacetime illustration.

(via)

And how adorbs are Rose and Amy?

(via)

Still love this crew, so much.

(via)

This is an excellent mashup.

(via)

And I love how well these two themes work together! (Thanks, Wes!)

In movie news:

A couple of trailers/clips:

The Avengers

(via)

(You can skip to :30 on this next one.)

(via)

Brave

(via)

And here's a fake trailer for The Avengers as they might have been in the 70s. (Thanks, Wes.)

Lots of Avengers art this week—seems as though people are as excited as I am about May 4.

I have a Doctor Who shirt that looks very similar to this. I obviously like the style.

(via)

Awww, Sealvengers.

(via)

It makes me happy when Agent Coulson's included with the rest of the gang.

(via)

I like the style of these couplings. (But Gale and Madge?)

(via)

SCIENCE! And technology:

Because I am a 12-year-old boy at heart, this makes me giggle.

(via)

I wish I thought of fun things like this to do with my toys.

(via)

The Disney ladies as Final Fantasy characters are looking pretty racy!

(via)

From TGG:

I found a bit of gaming news as well:

Tired of waiting for the live-action Uncharted movie? Check out these fan-made movies culled from the video games. (Thanks, Wes.)

I adore these illustrations of the Mass Effect gang. (Also, the original captions are so worth the click through.)

(via)

It would be awesome to see a TMNT movie in this style.

(via)

I like the pieced-paper look to these superheroine illustrations.

(via)

And finally, the world really is made better by these My Little Pony nerd mashups, isn't it.
