Premiere Week 2012: Thursday

Last year, Thursday night was one of the most jam-packed of the season. This year, however, it seems that things have been shuffled a bit, and there are only two shows premiering tonight that I'm interested in. (There are a couple of Thursday night CW shows starting later in October, but I'll post about them separately.)

What's premiering tonight?

The Big Bang Theory 7–7:30 p.m. (CBS)

The Big Bang Theory is a show that tries to connect with nerds, introduce nerdy things to the TV viewing masses and show us the inner lives of nerds. Being a self-diagnosed nerd myself, I sometimes find myself rebelling against this stereotyped view. (When Amy Farrah Fowler confused Star Wars and Star Trek, I nearly fell off the sofa in disbelief and annoyance.) The show can be amusing at times, I'll give it that, and I am interested to see how Howard fares while in space, so I'll keep watching. (I couldn't resist using this photo. Don't they all just look so uncharacteristically dapper?)

Elementary 9–10 p.m. (CBS)

Elementary stars Jonny Lee Miller as detective Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson in a modern-day drama about a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD's most impossible cases. Following his fall from grace in London and a stint in rehab, eccentric Sherlock escapes to Manhattan where his wealthy father forces him to live with his worst nightmare—a sober companion, Dr. Watson. A successful surgeon until she lost a patient and her license three years ago, Watson views her current job as another opportunity to help people, as well as paying a penance. However, the restless Sherlock is nothing like her previous clients. He informs her that none of her expertise as an addiction specialist applies to him and he's devised his own post-rehab regimen—resuming his work as a police consultant in New York City. (via)

As I was searching for this photo, I ran across this Paranoid Keanu meme that is a surprisingly  accurate assessment of my feelings toward this new show. Do I want to like it? Yes. I like both of the stars, and I like Sherlock Holmes adaptations. I'm just fearful that Elementary is going to be forced (by Moffatt, if that's possible?) to stray so far from the formula of a modern-day adaptation that works that it will venture into "doesn't work" territory. I also hope that Watson—in this case Joan rather than John—won't be too gimmicky.

I know a lot of you are Sherlock fans—will you be watching Elementary tonight? (And have any of you given up on TBBT?)

  1. i recorded elementary and am going to be watching it with my father in law as soon as we can find the time. i love lucy liu (p.s. why does the woman never age? jealous.) and i want it to do well but i am afraid that the formula of joan and sherlock will become a constant will they/won't they formula and that's not something i want out of this particular adventure. though keanu could be right..... (shakes fist at moffatt)
