Geek of the Week: Meet Tish

What's your name?
Tish Chambers

Where are you from?
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

What does it mean to you to be a geek/nerd?
Well, the definition "geek"/"nerd" as well as the cultural perception of it/them has changed so much in recent years. I've seen a difference in my own life, as well as in the media over the years as the term "geek" or "nerd" went from describing the losers playing Magic the Gathering everyday in the cafeteria to describing beloved characters like Seth Cohen to being a full-on mainstream trend in movies/TV, fashion, artwork, etc.

I think it has a lot to do with technology. Being passionate about technology used to be reserved for specialists, but now technology is such a huge part of how most everyone lives their lives that being even mildly passionate about it has become more common, and therefor more accepted. "Geek" has quickly gone from an insult to a proud statement, or admirable quality.

To me, then, the term "geek" or "nerd" has become synonymous with being particularly passionate or "into" something. I'm proud to say I'm a movie geek, a baking nerd, a Doctor Who nerd, and even a science geek. As a society, we've come to value a quality of "geekiness" in someone as it shows they have a passion and drive in them. I am all for it! I love to see people totally "geeking out" over something they absolutely adore and I'm not ashamed to say I do the same!

What are 2–5 things you're particularly passionate about?
Movies/TV (watching, the industry, someday hope to make)

Baking (cakes, cupcakes & cake pops—and making them vegan)

Connecting with people via the Internet. (That's kid of vague, but it encompasses various things that I love/why I love them: making videos for YouTube, blogging, etc.)
Ed. note: This last one is something I'm passionate about as well. I love getting to know awesome people, like Tish (and all the rest of the Geeks of the Week, natch), online!

Why are you passionate about these things?
I became passionate about making videos and watching movies/the movie industry around the same time (age 12-13). Thanks to the Internet, I was suddenly able to find out about new movies and download them, beginning my collection. (I can remember having 80 movies and thinking "That's quite a lot of movies to watch." Hilarious, now that I have about 750.) Movies and television shows are one of many mediums for telling stories. I love to get completely sucked into a movie or show, to live in that world for a little while. And, as a visually creative person, a movie or television series seems the only way I would be able to tell my own stories someday.

Baking is a passion I began cultivating when I was at film school. I had some friends that were really into cupcakes, and it sparked something in me. I started Googling "fondant cakes," spending a small fortune in the baking aisle of Michaels and watching a lot of Ace of Cakes. It's been a lingering interest since then, and only recently I've kicked it into full gear with becoming a Wilton Method Cake Decorating Instructor, making cakes for people, and starting to plan & dream of The Bakestress empire, starting with how-to videos.

Through all of my various creative endeavours, the Internet as been a constant. I've had some sort of blog since I was a teenager, always designing new layouts or websites for projects I haven't actually started yet, multiple MySpace accounts, Facebook pages, you name it. These days, I've become more refined in my Internet choices, but I know whatever I do in life, it will likely be Internet-based in some way. Whatever I do creatively, I want to share it with people and be able to connect with as many people as possible.

Do you have any special or hidden talents?
I think my only "hidden" talent would be my musical talent. I think it's the only thing that I can do that I haven't really fostered and felt it was impressive enough to share. I don't give this talent/skill/pastime/love nearly enough time to really grow and become better and share it. I can play/have played the piano, acoustic guitar, and flute. I also have a banjo I want to learn and I'm a decent singer. I would love to make time to practice more and be able to play & sing something well enough to make a video to share.
Ed. note: I'm so jealous about the banjo! I've wanted to learn how to play one for a while now, but it's super intimidating.

What was your favorite book/movie/TV show/other from 2011?
I started watching Doctor Who last year, does that count? ;) New Girl is the best new show that's come out in a long time! Sherlock is another very smart, impressive show that quickly got me obsessed.

What book/movie/TV show/other are you most looking forward to in 2012?
Returning: Doctor Who (I'm wary of a new companion, but I trust the show's team. The show never ceases to impress.)

New: The Mindy Project, Revolution, To Rome with Love, Paranorman

Do you have a "go-to" karaoke/Rock Band song? What is it?
I don't think I've ever karaoked or been brave enough to be the singer in Rock Band! If I had the chance now, though, I'd go for some Lana Del Rey because I have a lower voice like her, so I can sing along. Plus, of course, I love her songs and know the words enough to pull it off. ;)

What are three websites you like to visit every day?
Aside from my regular check-what's-new sites (Facebook/Twitter/Bloglovin'/YouTube/Instagram), I'm sure I look up something on IMDb.com everyday, I spend some time gathering inspiration on Pinterest, and most days I go to BuzzSugar.com and/or Vulture.com for my version of "news" (movie & TV industry news, general geekery).

Do you have a blog/website/Twitter name/etc. that you'd like to share?

Any additional comments or thoughts?
I'm so glad I discovered your blog, Mandy. Your variety of content and dedication to your blog is what keeps me visiting. Not to mention that we've become friends in our love of Doctor Who and general geekiness. :) Thanks for including me on your blog!
Ed. note: Aww, thanks! Such lovely compliments.

Tish's bonus questions:

What genre of movies would you most like to make? Why?
While I like watching nearly any genre of movies, if I were to make movies I would probably go for the "indie" style. Because of independent films' smaller budgets, everyone has to work their asses off and most everyone involved really cares about getting the movie made. My favorite thing about film school was being "on set". (More like "on location in the dorms" for each others short films.) No matter what my job was, I just loved being part of a crew. Everyone had such love for the process and respect to the filmmaker. I hope one day I can be part of a small, tight-knit crew like that. Or even just be on set doing behind-the-scenes videos, because I love that too.

Who's your favorite Doctor? Companion? Combination?
What an impossible question to answer! LOL I've loved each of The Doctors in their own way, but if I had to pick "my" Doctor, it would be David Tennant. (Do I need to explain? We all love him, right!?) As for favorite companion, I would have to pick Donna. I loved that unlike the previous companions (particularly Martha, who I dislike) she was confident that she was equal to The Doctor and deserving of having her place on the TARDIS, not worshipping at his feet or falling in love with him. However, I also have to include Matt Smith's Doctor and River Song for my favorite combination. Even before he really knew her, they had such chemistry. I love their flirtatious banter!
Ed. note: I feel much the same way!

Thanks, Tish, for being a Geek of the Week!

If you'd like to be a future GotW, please email me.

  1. i am also uber jealous about the banjo. i've always wanted to learn the mandolin but am super intimidated by it... mandy, you learn banjo, i'll learn mandolin, we'll get a stand-up bass player and create a band called the doctor/donna! as they are the best combo.

i'm totally impressed by the cupcakes/cakes! i'm a horrible baker and have to live vicariously through others- totally gonna stalk your facebook page. be prepared.
