Geek of the Week: Meet Holly

What's your name?
Holly Flanagan

Where are you from?
Raised in southern California, living in Utah.

What does it mean to you to be a geek/nerd?
When I begin to speak or write about something that I am passionate about, I preface it with "Nerd Alert!"

If you are passionate about something, even the coolest thing in the world, you are a nerd.

What are 2–5 things you're particularly passionate about?
I am passionate about:
  • Becoming your best self (whatever that means to you).
  • Recording your memories and sharing them.
  • Candy.

Why are you passionate about these things?
Candy is self-explanatory. It's candy.
Ed. note: Preach, sister.

Recording memories is meaningful to me, personally, because I have a terrible internal memory. Looking back through my journals, blogs, photos, and scrapbooks makes me feel like I actually lived my own life. Sharing all of those things with others is just fun, especially when it's embarrassing or silly.

My main passion, however, is becoming my best self. At all stages of my life, I have always been Holly; changing my last name, having kids, and living in different states have not made that any different. And I want to always strive to be better, be it physically, mentally or emotionally.

That means I am usually trying to hone a skill, treat my body in a more healthy way, or work on the relationships with those around me. At any time, I could list a handful of goals that I have for myself.

I also wish to encourage others to become their best self. I usually do that through example—I am willing to fall flat on my face to show people that they can do hard things and live through them.

Do you have any special or hidden talents?
The party trick that my mother always makes me pull out has no name, but is easy to envision.

I choose a victim, make him or her stand face to face with me, and loosen all the tension from my arms. With those flappy arms, I begin to turn my body back and forth. I walk towards the victim and just smack the crap out of them with my arms.

I am 27 years old, and my mom still makes me do that. I do it because it makes her laugh.
Ed. note: I'll do a lot of things to make my mom laugh, too, regardless of how silly I look in the process.

What was your favorite book/movie/TV show/other from 2011?
Mindy Kaling's book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is my most anticipated book of 2011 that I still haven't read.

What book/movie/TV show/other are you most looking forward to in 2012?
I was so looking forward to watching Smash on NBC; after watching the whole first season, I am now looking forward to hate-watching it in the future.

Do you have a "go-to" karaoke/Rock Band song? What is it?
"End of the Road" by Boyz II Men.

What are three websites you like to visit every day?
20four12, a fantastic book review blog.

Damn Hell Ass Kings, a portal to all of my favorite pop culture blogs.

Twitter—I am an active Twitter user at @flolly.

Do you have a blog/website/Twitter name/etc. that you'd like to share?

Any additional comments or thoughts?
I am your biggest fan.

You, yes you, you reading this.

Holly's bonus questions:

What's your favorite candy?
My favorite candy is Heath bars (or any chocolate-covered English toffee). I don't want to say I'm an Anglophile, but I will say that I'm a Toffeephile.
Ed. note: I'm a huge fan of Heath—and toffee—too!

When helping people "be their better selves," what's some of your favorite advice to give?
Ed. note: There is some truly great advice in these posts, friends. Definitely check them out!

Thanks, Holly, for being a Geek of the Week!
