Geek of the Week: Meet Kristen

What's your name?
Kristen Miller

Where are you from?
Rittman, Ohio. AKA the world's smallest village. Seriously, I graduated in a class of 88 and 4 of them were my cousins ...

What does it mean to you to be a geek/nerd?
To me, being a geek is being really passionate about something. Being a nerd, is being obsessed to the point that you only discuss that "thing."

Back in the 80s, it seemed nerd and geek were interchangeable thanks to movies like Revenge of the Nerds and Sixteen Candles.

Now, I think there is a huge difference.

Also, see this: http://dailyinfographic.com/geeks-vs-nerds-infographic.

What are 2–5 things you're particularly passionate about?
1. Walt Disney World
2. Broadway musicals
3. Young Adult literature
4. Volunteering

Why are you passionate about these things?
I have always loved Walt Disney World. I'm in a wheelchair and I can pretty much do everything my boys can do when we go there. And I just know how to go. I plan. I instinctively know where to go and what to do in order to maximize our enjoyment/budget/time. And I like to share that "wisdom" -- I have planned over 50 vacations to WDW for friends.

Pretty much every early movie I remember watching was a Rogers and Hammerstein musical. I could quote The Sound of Music in its entirety from the time I was 4. I wanted to be Annie. I wanted to visit Bali Ha'i. I first heard of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" performed by Siamese concubines. I wanted to ride in a surrey with fringe on top. I still am crazy about musicals. I still cry every time Maria marries the captain, Tony dies, or when everyone must leave Anatevka. Seeing a live musical is like my version of the Superbowl.

My hometown library was not wheelchair accessible. All of the kids' books were upstairs, so, unless I bought books or checked them out of the school library, I had to read Young Adult Literature. I remember reading Judy Blume's Forever in sixth grade, under the sheets because you did NOT want to be caught with that book! I related to "Deenie" in fifth grade because I had surgery to repair my scoliosis. Now, I enjoy reading more Young Adult Literature than most Adult. And, apparently I'm not alone. My son's middle school librarian and I are always gabbing about books. There are tons of blogs about Moms who read these books, like www.latebloomeronline.com and www.onceuponatwilight.com.

Volunteering has always been a large part of my life. I began in middle school with doing things for my Mom's school. Now, I am active in my son's middle school's PTA. I have been PTO President at two different schools, served as PTA Secretary, and been on a plethora of different PTA committees. I am serving my fourth year on a site-based planning committee. Last year, I was on my son's swim team's board of directors. It's just something I've always been passionate about doing.

Do you have any special or hidden talents?
Does dealing with my husband, Mark, count? ;-)

I can play "Barbara Ann" by the Beach Boys on a recorder. Next time you come over, expect a concert. ;-)

(Ed. note: How darling are these little nerds?!)

What was your favorite book/movie/TV show/other from 2011?
Book: Room by Emma Donoghue
Movie: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2
TV Show: Sherlock, New Girl, Game of Thrones and American Horror Story
Musical: Revival-Anything Goes

What book/movie/TV show/other are you most looking forward to in 2012?
Book: Timepiece by Myra McEntire
Movie: Les Misérables and The Hunger Games
TV Show: The Walking Dead
Musical: Newsies
(Ed. note: Newsies is my favorite musical, ever. I'd love to see it live!)

Do you have a "go-to" karaoke/Rock Band song? What is it?
"9 to 5," "Son of a Preacher Man" and "The Gambler."

What are three websites you like to visit every day?
Pinterest.com—I have pinned over 6100 things. I love the ideas I get from it. I am slowly trying to DO some of the things I have pinned!

www.younghouselove.com—I love decorating websites and this one is great. These do-it-yourself-ers are funny and didn't know how to hang a picture five years ago.

http://allears.net/index.html—The best info on Walt Disney World.

Do you have a blog/website/Twitter name/etc. that you'd like to share?
My blog: Curly Kristen

Twitter: @CurlyKristen

Any additional comments or thoughts?
I am married to a geek and we are raising a geek. :)
(Ed. note: You'll get to meet both in future GotW posts!)

Kristen's bonus questions:

What are the first three rides you immediately head to once you get into Disney World?
Magic Kingdom—Carousel of Progress, Monster Inc Laugh Floor and Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin (We always start in Tomorrowland so the boys can ride Space Mountain before it gets too busy!)
Epcot—Soarin', Living with the Land and Spaceship Earth
Disney's Hollywood Studios—Toy Story Midway Mania, Star Tours and The Great Movie Ride
Animal Kingdom—Kilimanjaro Safari, Dinosaur and Primevil Whirl

What's your favorite number from Newsies?
"Seize the Day." I am really hoping it has a successful run at the Nederlander (where another fave musical, Rent, played) so that it's there when we go to New York in October!!

Thanks, Kristen, for being a Geek of the Week!

If you'd like to be a future GotW, please email me.
