Geek of the Week: Meet Perry

What's your name?

Where are you from?
Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

What does it mean to you to be a geek/nerd?
I don't know. I guess it's just who I am. It means I can enrich the people around me with my random and useless knowledge. Hahaha.

What are 2–5 things you're particularly passionate about?
Nail polish, baking, comic book movies, and organizing.

Why are you passionate about these things?
Nail polish—I love pretty colours. It's something small that I can do for myself to feel pretty and girly. And it's also a way of expressing myself. I don't wear any make-up (lip balm doesn't count, right?) but I am crazy with the nail polish. Generally, I won't leave the house without it and I feel naked on the random days I do.

Baking—It amazes me how you can put all these different things together and tada! You have edible goods. (Most of the time.) I also think I get this from my mother. We just like feeding people. Although my mom is more of a cook than a baker.

Comic book movies—Simple: Good triumphs over evil. Escapism at its best, darlin'.

Organizing—Life is chaos and unpredictable. That is the constant in life. Things happen how they happen despite your best efforts. So I forget about what I can't control and find joy in the things I can.

Do you have any special or hidden talents?
I can undo just about any knot. It's weird. I'm like Maniac Magee. And if you know who that is, I <3 you.
(Ed. note: I didn't know who that was. Shame on me.)

What was your favorite book/movie/TV show/other from 2011?
If you put a gun to my head and told me to pick a favourite of anything, it would be game over. I just can't. I'm not capable of picking favourites.

What book/movie/TV show/other are you most looking forward to in 2012?
Right at this very moment I'm looking forward to seeing One for the Money. I don't even like Katherine Heigl, but I seem to always like her movies and I loved the books that this move is based on.

Do you have a "go-to" karaoke/Rock Band song? What is it?
You know what, the last time I did karaoke, I was probably 4, and I've never played Rock Band.

What are three websites you like to visit every day?
Gmail, Pinterest, and the weather. I kid you not. I probably check the weather once every hour. It's a sick obsession, I tells you.

Do you have a blog/website/Twitter name/etc. that you'd like to share?

Any additional comments or thoughts?

Also, drop by my pick my polish page if you're interested, and pick a polish for me to wear.

Perry's bonus questions:

What are some of your tried-and-true tips regarding nail polish (application and removal)?
Regarding wearing nail polish, use a base coat that isn't thick and dried out. Will totally chip your nails way faster. If your basecoat is indeed thick and goopy, I suggest grabbing some nail polish thinner and adding a few drops. Never use nail polish remover in your nail polish. You'll ruin it as remover is formulated to break down polish and thinner is formulated to just add what has dried out in polish.

Regarding removal, let your remover do the work for you. Don't stand there and scrub, scrub, scrub, you'll only end up damaging the top layer of your nail and cause your poor nail bed some trauma. What I do is take a remover soaked cotton ball and swipe all 10 nails quickly. Just to get the remover on each of your nails. Then I go back to the first nail and start a gentle rubbing motion. I rub some of the nail polish off and then move onto the next, never fully removing all the polish on each nail in the first go around. By the second hand, you will notice the polish comes off easier, that's because your remover has had time to soak into the polish and dissolve it. On the second round, I find it much easier to remove the polish. Just about wipes off. Of course, this tip is for cremes and shimmers only, glitters will always be a gigantic pain in the rump.
(Ed. note: Take my word for it, this girl really knows her stuff!)

If you could have a superpower, which one would you prefer to have?
I think if I had a super power, I would want to be super mentally focussed. I can be such a space cadet sometimes and I want to be able to focus on things instead of starting things and then getting distracted and wandering away from it. Also, I just recently watched Limitless and I totally thought that was cool. Maybe ask me again after I've watched the Avengers and I might have a new answer for you. Teehee.

Thanks, Perry, for being a Geek of the Week!
