Geek of the Week: Meet Kai

What's your name?
Kai Mercado

Where are you from?
San Diego

What does it mean to you to be a geek/nerd?
Being a nerd has a special meaning to me. I grew up with two older brothers, who I always desperately tried to be as cool as. That meant reading their comic books, playing their video games, and watching movies they liked were part of my every day routine growing up. My brothers must have taught me well, because as an adult I have a deep appreciation for all things geek, with an emphasis in all things superhero. I can talk any nerd under the table about the differences between DC and Marvel (Marvel is WAY better by the way. With the exception of Batman from DC.). It isn't just about knowledge, but a passion for these topics that make you a true Geek. Geek and proud!

What are 2–5 things you're particularly passionate about?
1. Writing.
2. Family.
3. So Cal Blogger Meet-Up!
4. Dogs
5. Food.

Why are you passionate about these things?
1.I never knew what I wanted to do in college. My last year when I had to write dozens of 30 page papers, I realized I actually really like to write. That is when I started my blog, and it became a perfect way to work on my writing, and put down all the crazy thoughts in my head down on paper (well, not really paper, but you get what I mean).

2. If there is one thing I will always hold near to my heart no matter what the circumstance, it is my amazing family. Friends come and go, but you only get one family in your life, so I think it is important to appreciate the one you have. I also got blessed with a pretty amazing set of people as my family. My brothers are my best friends, and I talk to my parents almost every day. They are my rock, and I would be lost without them.

3. I have had the honor to be a part of planning the So Cal Blogger Meet-Up this year, and it has been such an amazing experience! We had to cap the event at 60 bloggers, and we were amazed by the amount of people wanted to come! I am so excited to be a part of such an awesome event that is bringing Bloggers together!

4. I seriously love all dogs, and am a true believer that there is no such thing as an ugly dog. People have told me that I have a dog radar, and if there is a dog anywhere around me, I will find it. If ti were up to me (and my boyfriend let me), I would have six dogs. Maybe I will get there one day...

5. Do I really need to explain that one? :)

Do you have any special or hidden talents?
I always hated this question, because I never know what my hidden talent is? I am really good at doing hair? Does that count?

What was your favorite book/movie/TV show/other from 2011?
Toughy! I really loved Super 8! But I could never choose one show or movie!

What book/movie/TV show/other are you most looking forward to in 2012?
The Hunger Games movie! AND The Dark Knight Rises AND The Avengers...okay I am done.
(Ed. note: Girl after my own heart!)

Do you have a "go-to" karaoke/Rock Band song? What is it?
Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi

What are three websites you like to visit every day?

Do you have a blog/website/Twitter name/etc. that you'd like to share?
Any additional comments or thoughts?
I honestly live for your Nerd News posts! I rely on them every week for the latest and greatest in all things Nerd. I even bought my brother an iPhone cover of one of the Superhero artwork you posted!
(Ed. note: AWWW. Thank you, Kai! It honestly makes me giddy when people let me know my silly stuff is useful.)

Kai's bonus questions:

When/If you have children, will you work to instill a love of "geek" in them (like your brothers did in you)?
Of course! As soon as they are old enough, they will be forced to watch all the classics, (Star Wars, Superman, Indiana Jones, etc.) and what will probably be considered classics when they are older (X-Men, The Dark Knight, Thor, Iron Man, etc.). This kid will be an expert on all things nerd before he/she even gets to grade school.
(Ed. note: This a most excellent life plan.)

What's your favorite type of food to eat/make (if you enjoy cooking)?
I LOVE to bake, and HATE to cook. Luckily, my boyfriend Nick loves to cook, so we don't starve every night. I like to explore when it comes to baking, and always find new yummy recipes. I would say that my go to is Peanut Butter Smores Turnovers. Seriously. Make them. They are AMAZING.

Thanks, Kai, for being a Geek of the Week!

If you'd like to be a future GotW, please email me.
