Carry-on essentials

Packing up for my trip--Hello from lovely Cupertino!--got me thinking about my "necessities" of airline travel. There are a few things I always pack in my carry-on to take with me when I'm flying.

  • Snacks. Snacks for any length of plane ride are essential, because the eats they give you on most flights are really, well, lame. I enjoy honey-roasted peanuts as much as the next person, but there's only so many of those little packets I can eat with a clear conscience, especially now that we're eating healthier. Today I brought along some beef jerky, some nuts and a little bit of candy. (Colt and I both indulged in a little pick-n-mix to stave off the lonelies.)
  • Something to read. I like to bring issues of magazines that I've been saving up or a book. I also like to pack extras in my suitcase in case I finish on the ride "there;" I'd hate to have nothing to do on the way "home." This trip I brought Gail Carriger's Heartless, which I read the entirety of on the flight from Austin to San Francisco, and Cassandra Clare's City of Bones for the ride home.
  • A project. If you don't want to read, or finish whatever you brought to read, it's great to have something else to take up your time. I often bring a crochet project, but this time I brought along my new apartment notebook, and the latest IKEA and CB2 catalogs. I've got to get more of these ideas out of my head and onto paper!
  • Music. It's great to be able to tune out the airplane noise with some good tunes. I brought along my phone, which has music on it, but forgot headphones (of course). Luckily, the plane ride was relatively quiet and my book was quite engrossing.
  • A sweater. I get cold easily in air-conditioned environments so I take a sweater with me almost everywhere I go. Planes can be such oddly climate controlled places. Sometimes they're hot, sometimes they're cold, most times they're stuffy. I like to be prepared.
Do you guys have any carry-on necessities? Am I missing out on something essential that will make my plane trips infinitely more amazing?

Also, does anyone else pretend like they're on a transporter pad when they walk through that circular section of the jetway? Because I do. Every time.

  1. Pick-N-Mix! I think of Nathan on Misfits, of course! I hope you have a great trip :)

  2. Just thought I would pop in and say Hi! I am doing 30 days of lists and totally loving it. Love your little book that you made, I am using my Smash journal. Totally love the photo of the sun.
    Happy listing

  3. I always take something I can use as a pillow (those little plane ones aren't pillows, really) and an eye mask! And big, cozy woolly socks!

  4. Megan-Yes, exactly, haha! And it's been great so far.

Tracey-Hi! Thanks for stopping by. :)

Annika-Good thinking! I tend not to sleep on planes when I'm by myself, but for longer trips or ones with Colt, those are great ideas!

  5. I bring most of the same things. I've been burned before with plane meals. Not only are they often terrible, but sometimes they forget the vegetarian ones (even when I reserve one) and the flight attendants are VERY rude about it. You would think they would just stash a couple just in case.

For really long trips, I bring a wrap or pashmina that can double as a light blanket or be worn as a scarf, a neck pillow, and face mask.

Also, my DS is a necessity along with a book and iPod.

  6. Jen-You would think. :P And great idea on the pashmina! Multiple uses with one small item. :)
