obsessed.: Doctor Who

I've been a little off the past couple of weeks, first trying to catch up from vacation, then (and currently) dealing with the allergies that Austin is infamous for. I just haven't been feeling up to my normal levels. So here I sit, wracking my brain, trying to think of something that I currently can't get enough of. Then it hits me, like a big blue police box spinning wildly out of control. How have I never posted about my love for the good Doctor?!

For those of you unfamiliar with the series:
Doctor Who is a British science fiction television program produced by the BBC. The program depicts the adventures of a mysterious and eccentric Time Lord known as the Doctor who travels through time and space in his time machine, the TARDIS (an acronym for Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space), which normally appears from the exterior to be a blue 1950s British police box. With his companions, he explores time and space, faces a variety of foes and saves civilizations, helping people and righting wrongs. (via)
The show also has the distinction of being in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-running scifi TV series of all time, thanks in part to the fact that the main character can regenerate his appearance and personality. Over the course of the 30+ years of the show's history, 11 different men have played the role.

Here's a six-minute video that covers the main points of the entire series.

I jumped into watching with the most recent reboot attempt/the Ninth Doctor (played by Christopher Eccleston). I've since fallen madly in love with the wacky hijinks of the show and the great cast of characters.

Fans of the show have wildly different opinions on who the "best" Doctor is ... for me, "my" Doctor will always be David Tennant/Ten. He played the role for three seasons and when it was time for him to go, my little nerd heart broke. The current incarnation, Matt Smith/Eleven, is doing swimmingly at the role, so my heart's healed a bit, but there will always be a little crack (in the Universe, ha!) that will never fully heal.

Do you have a favorite?

(SEMI-TANGENT TIME: This is probably the greatest idea I've come across in a while: an 80s glam-rock Doctor Who cartoon.

If you are a fan, please do yourself a favor and go to the original post and listen to the song that goes along with these illustrations. It's perfect.)

The sixth season starts up this Saturday evening on BBC America (here in the states). Watch it. Love it. Live it.

  3. I would LOVE to watch it with you. I luckily have a husband who's in to it as much as I am, but that would be so fun. Someone seriously needs to get on building a transporter!

  4. Yeah, it would be much less fun if my husband wasn't totally into it too.
